ANSI (American National Standards Institute)
In the United States; ANSI serves as a quasi-national st andards organization. Itprovides "area charters" for groups that establish st andards in specific fields. Thesegroups include the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and theElectronic Industries Alliance (EIA). ANSI is unique among the world's st andardsgroups as a nongovernmental body granted the sole vote for the United States in theInternational Organization for St andardization (ISO). This status is part of the reasonANSI bends over backward to limit its role to that of facilitator; or catalyst; in theproduction of st andards. See IEEE; EIA and ISO.
