When you think of OASIS (Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards), this Web services and standards.
It is a not-for-profit consortium that helps promote the "development, convergence and adoption of open standards for the global information society," according to the organization's web site. Officially, the group is a consortium that produces a vast number of Web services standards, along with standards for security, e-business, and standardization efforts in the public sector and for application-specific markets. Founded in 1993, OASIS has more than 5,000 participants representing over 600 organizations and individual members in 100 countries.
Maybe people became familiar with OASIS through it's coordination of the standard known as [Open Document Format] (ODF). But it has worked on a wide range of IT standards over the past 25 years.
Several government agencies and departments are listed as contributors and participates on the OASIS contributors page. this means that they have been active in the proposals and review of open standards.

OASIS provides a forum to unite international communities of governments, legal professionals, and suppliers who share the common goal to advance the electronic exchange of information.
Technical Committees.
- OASIS Election and Voter Services TC. Coordinates the Oasis standard enabling the exchange of data for public and private election services.
- OASIS Emergency Management TC. Coordinates the Oasis standard enabling information exchange to advance incident preparedness and response to emergency situations.
- OASIS International Health Continuum (IHC) TC. Provides a forum for the global healthcare community to articulate and coordinate requirements for XML- and Web services-based standards.
- OASIS LegalXML Electronic Court Filing TC. Uses XML to create and transmit legal documents among attorneys, courts, litigants, and others.
- OASIS LegalXML eNotarization TC. Develops technical requirements to govern self-proving electronic legal information
- OASIS LegalXML Integrated Justice TC. Facilitates the exchange of data among justice system branches and agencies for criminal and civil cases.
- OASIS Tax XML TC. Promotes interoperability of XML tax-related information.
